“Breaking News—The Last Dance for Freedom?”—a one-act, performative piece by playwright, actress, and performance artist Kristina Marija Kulinič that attempts to reflect on the spirit of our times through the biblical archetype of Salome.
Salome, still a teenager, having captivated her stepfather with her dance, asks him—at her mother’s urging—to bring her the head of John the Baptist on a silver platter. This story has sparked the imagination of artists for many years; the most famous and enduring interpretation of the story is Oscar Wilde’s play *Salome*, in which the girl becomes a symbol of impossible/rejected love, passion, and a certain shadow side of womanhood. In “Hot News,” Kulinič seeks a different perspective and invites us to explore what and who today’s Salome might be. Delving into themes of loneliness and a crisis of truth, Kulinič invites us to encounter a Salome tormented by her (lack of) perception of reality, desperately seeking connection, and striving to break free.
About the author:
Kristina Marija Kulinič is a playwright, actress, and director of the younger generation whose plays have been staged in Lithuania (directed by Gildas Aleksa, Artūras Areima, and Ieva Jackevičiūtė) and at the Latvian National Theater (directed by Artūras Areima). She wrote the play and directed the production *Good Weather, If You Don’t Think Too Much* (Vilnius Old Theater).
