“Sometimes Life Is Dark” – a dance-theater performance about complex emotional states and the shadow side of human nature, which is often suppressed in various, sometimes even harmful ways. It is a interplay between the inner experiences of a suffering person—the artist—and the absurdity of the outside world, permeated by dark humor. These contradictions, which constantly escalate into open conflict, are conveyed through a synthesis of dance, theater, and music that demands great emotional and physical effort.
The performance is inspired by the nostalgic sound of the band “Mazzy Star” from the late 1980s and early 1990s, as well as the lost, rebellious aesthetic of the generation that marked the end of the last century. Using absurd imagery and a deliberately fragmented set design, the creator invites the audience on a journey through an inner world shrouded in real and imagined shadows. This journey is undertaken with the hope of escaping the labyrinth of pain and closing its doors, while searching along the way for healthier ways to exist, live, and create.
The work is closely tied to personal experiences that are familiar to almost everyone: coping with setbacks, coming face-to-face with oneself, seeking help during emotional crises, and questioning the meaning of life. The performance invites us to start a dialogue about taboo topics, to reflect, to accept our inner darkness, and not to turn away from the complex aspects of our personalities.
