Once upon a time, every home longed for a piano. It usually stood in the living room like a promise—of culture, a better future for the children, and cozier evenings. Over time, this promise faded, sending the fate of these old instruments down unexpected paths: gathering dust in homes or moved out into stairwells and courtyards, they became decorative accents, merely a reminder of their long-standing practical purpose.
“Compost” begins where the history of musical instruments usually ends. Three pianos—rejected, distanced from their usual sound and appearance—become a fabric that, as it gradually decomposes, nourishes and creates new life: the three performers audibly transport the listener to a mystical space imbued with Lithuanian folk motifs. There, a dialogue emerges between those who would normally shy away from one another. A circus artist juggles and balances among the instruments, blending into the process of making music, while the movement on stage and the sounds produced create a space for these means of expression to gently blossom. As a result, the entire stage transforms into a playground where objects take on new functions, and the performative language of the body becomes the connecting thread that unites all these elements.
This is an audio fairy tale, based on games and folklore motifs, about our relationship with the environment around us, objects, and cultural symbols—one that opens up space to ask: what can emerge when we allow our perspective on symbols to change?
