What connects Hurricane Lothar, which ravaged Europe in December 1999, the Book of Job, primeval forests, and jellyfish? Turritopsis dohrnii, the ancient Proto-Baltic language, and pork? The line between eternity and transience is barely perceptible: the end of one becomes the beginning of the other. Every evening, as we fall asleep out of habit, we hope to wake up in the morning—as if an “end file” existed but was operating in sleep mode. While we plan our daily lives, the processes of decay and birth continue unceasingly in nature.
Each of us cautiously comes to terms with the sense of transience. This difficult process takes place as hints of it fall at our feet amid the flow of everyday life. At the same time, it’s as if we’re searching for a recipe for eternity—but perhaps we are already eternal?
“Sarabanda” is a structured audio-visual lecture in which science intertwines with myths, errors of the imagination, and hallucinations. It is an unexpected escape from reality, a moment of daydreaming at the most inopportune time.
